Make Mission Control into True Virtual Desktops on Mac

Changing Spaces in Mission Control only changes the current set of windows displayed on your Mac: the background desktop files (and widgets) stay the same across all of your Spaces.

If you've ever wondered how to have different desktop files for each Space on your Mac, InfiniDesk's Follow Spaces Mode is exactly for that.

InfiniDesk supercharges Mission Control. With InfiniDesk, each Space can have different windows and different background desktop contents.

Using Follow Spaces Mode

  • First, set up your Spaces in Mission Control, and create the Desktop Views you want in InfiniDesk.
  • Next, select General Settings › Follow Spaces Mode from the InfiniDesk menu. (Available from macOS 14 Sonoma and onwards).
  • Select a Space in Mission Control, then choose the Desktop View in InfiniDesk that you want to appear in that Space. Open the options menu for the Desktop View and click Pin to This Space.
  • Now, whenever you switch to that Space, InfiniDesk automatically displays the pinned Desktop View.
  • Repeat this process for your other Spaces!

This process lets you create separate desktop environments for different projects, helping you organize your Mac desktop and keep different desktop files for different Spaces.

Remember, two or more Spaces in Mission Control can display the same Desktop View if you want. And if a Space doesn't have a Desktop View pinned to it, it simply shows your current desktop contents when you switch to it.

If you ever switch back to Classic Mode (General Settings › Classic Mode), InfiniDesk remembers all of your Follow Spaces settings, so you can return to them at any time.
